Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas, is a colorless, odorless gas that helps patients relax. It’s commonly used and provides relief from anxiety and potential discomfort during dental treatments. There are many benefits and few risks associated with nitrous oxide. It’s one of the safest analgesics available.

To administer nitrous oxide, we’ll place a small, comfortable mask over your nose. You’ll breathe in the gas and experience a pleasant level of sedation in as few as 30 seconds. Your cheeks and gums might also begin to feel numb.

Dr. Puig will adjust the nitrous oxide to the appropriate level for your needs, then administer numbing and begin treatment. Once your procedures are complete, you’ll be given pure oxygen to breathe for a little while before we remove the nasal mask. The effects of nitrous subside rapidly, so you can drive and return to your normal routine immediately following treatment.

Patients suffering from claustrophobia or blocked nasal passages may not be good candidates for nitrous oxide sedation. Dr. Puig will assess your unique situation and determine the appropriate sedation method for your needs.
