Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide (N2O) is a colorless, odorless gas with a pleasant taste, which helps people to relax. It is used in about one third of dental practices in the United States and offers patients relief from any possible discomfort and anxiety during treatments. There are many benefits and few risks associated with Nitrous Oxide, and it is one of the safest analgesics available.

How Does It Work?

As a small mask is placed over your nose, you are instructed to begin breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. You will begin to experience a pleasing level of sedation in as little as 30 seconds. For others it will take a few minutes. Your cheeks and gums might also begin to feel numb.

The Nitrous Oxide is then adjusted to the appropriate level. Dr. Puig will then administer any anesthetic (when needed) and begin the treatment. Once your treatment is completed, you are given pure oxygen to breathe for a few minutes, which will remove the effects of the Nitrous Oxide. One of the advantages of using Nitrous Oxide is that you are free to drive yourself home and do not need an escort.

Patients suffering from claustrophobia or blocked nasal passages may not be able to use Nitrous Oxide effectively.
