Advanced Dental Technology in Orlando - VELscope

Dynamic Smile Design is a proud early adopter of the VELscope, a technology introduced in 2006 for early detection of oral cancer and other diseases of the mouth.

VELscope shines a safe blue light into the mouth and illuminates fluorophore molecules in the oral mucosal tissues. These molecules "fluoresce" similar to how white shoes would under a black light. Abnormalities in the tissue produce a blue light, which is filtered out by the Velscope and appears as a dark spot. This tells dentists further examination is necessary. The exam is painless and takes only one to two minutes.

Though VELscope is not a diagnosis tool, it allows us to catch many oral problems before they can be seen by traditional examination. Among others, VELscope can detect the following diseases in their early stages:

Who is at risk for oral cancer?

At one time, smoking and heavy drinking were closely correlated with oral cancer. But researchers at Johns Hopkins have found Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the number one risk factor in many new cases. Typical recent oral cancer victims include both men and women, are between age 20 and 50, and have no genetic predisposition or traditional risk factors. HPV is a rapidly spreading virus with few telltale signs. This means you may be at a higher risk for oral cancer than you think.

Adopting the Velscope technology

Dr. Puig and the Dynamic Smile Design team only got on board with VELscope after carefully investigating the research. Many studies have shown the technology is effective in early detection of various oral diseases. VELscope is FDA approved and has been recognized by the World Health Organization as an accessible new technology that could help address serious global health concerns. The technology is being used around the world to help detect and treat devastating diseases and save lives.
