As Dr. Patel About Cosmetic Dental Contouring

If you are like most people, you might be acutely aware of your smile’s imperfections. You might worry about baring your teeth in pictures or showing off those pearly whites as you talk—especially if you have teeth that are chipped, pitted, or strangely shaped. Fortunately, here at Dynamic Smile Design, we can smooth out the contours of your teeth with a procedure called tooth reshaping.

How Tooth Reshaping Can Help

To reshape your teeth, Dr. Patel will use gentle dental sanding discs or diamond burrs to reshape the exterior of your teeth. The process is quick and painless, and can help with these problems:

  • Jagged Curves Between Teeth: Sometimes, people’s teeth don’t fit together properly, creating strange gaps. Fortunately, Dr. Patel can sand down the dental surfaces between your teeth, so that teeth fit together snugly.
  • Long Canines: If you have long canine teeth, it might make you look a little like a vampire. However, dental contouring can also be used to shorten teeth, so that your smile looks uniform.
  • Chipped Teeth: In addition to making your smile look childlike, chipped teeth can have sharp edges that can cut your tongue and cheeks when you talk and eat. However, contouring can round out chipped areas, so that your mouth stays comfortable.
  • Indentations or Pitting: If you have a history of brushing too aggressively, you might have indentations or pitting on the surfaces of your teeth. Dental contouring can be used to smooth out the surface of your teeth, so that food and grime doesn’t collect in these crevices.

If you think that dental contouring might help you, make an appointment with Dr. Patel today. Here is what you should expect during a tooth reshaping appointment:

What To Expect During Tooth Reshaping

Before Dr. Patelcan start reshaping your smile, she will need to make sure that your teeth are healthy and clean. Your teeth will be cleaned and inspected for underlying decay. Since tooth reshaping also includes removing a small portion of dental enamel, Dr. Patel will also take a series of x-rays to determine how much dental material can be removed.

Unlike other dental procedures, anesthetic shots are not usually needed. Since Dr. Patel won’t be doing any drilling into the pulp of your teeth, which hold the dental nerves, you shouldn’t feel any discomfort during the procedure.

After Dr. Patel determines that dental contouring will be safe and beneficial, she will start gently sanding away affected areas to round out the contours of your teeth. With tooth reshaping, you might be able to perfect your smile.
