Invisalign: Frequently Asked Questions

Everyone wants and deserves a beautiful smile. Many patients with teeth alignment issues, especially adults, want to correct the problem but don’t want to wear braces. Fortunately, there is another solution that is discreet, comfortable, and works quickly. Invisalign clear braces are non-invasive and can be customized for your teeth in just a few visits to the dentist.

Are you considering Invisalign treatment but have questions? These frequently asked questions will help you understand more about Invisalign, what to expect, and how they can benefit you.

WHAT IS INVISALIGN?

Invisalign is an effective and convenient alternative to the traditional braces consisting of metal brackets. The Invisalign treatment uses customized, clear plastic tray aligners that are nearly invisible. The aligners are made to fit the patient’s mouth shape and put gentle pressure on teeth to shift them slowly into the correct position.

HOW DOES THE TREATMENT PROCESS WORK?

Once Dr. Patel has determined that Invisalign is right for you, the treatment process can begin. There are several steps to this:

  • First, we take X-rays and impressions to map out the exact shape of your teeth.
  • Second, the images are used to create your customized aligner trays. They are made of BPA-free plastic that is almost invisible. You will change aligner trays about every two weeks.
  • Wear your aligner trays every day for 20 to 22 hours. You can remove them to eat, brush and floss your teeth, and clean the aligners.
  • Visit us every four to six weeks to get a checkup. Dr. Patel will check your progress and make sure your teeth are moving into the proper position.

Getting fitted for your Invisalign aligners is a simple process. Many patients prefer this method to the more complex and time-consuming metal braces.

HOW IS INVISALIGN DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL BRACES?

Traditional braces require you to have metal brackets glued to your teeth. The braces are held together with wires and small rubber bands. Invisalign is different because instead of wire affixed to each tooth, you only have to wear two trays that are custom-made to fit over your top and bottom rows of teeth. These trays are clear, comfortable, and removable.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR INVISALIGN TREATMENT?

You may consider teeth straightening treatment for cosmetic reasons, or to avoid potential oral health issues in the future. Most Invisalign patients have issues with crowding, spacing, or problems with their bite.

Invisalign is suitable for both adults and teenagers. The popularity of Invisalign has led to a new treatment called Invisalign Teen. It has additional features to account for growing teeth in younger patients.

WHAT IF I’VE ALREADY HAD BRACES OR DENTAL WORK IN THE PAST?

You may be able to switch from braces to Invisalign. Discuss your options with your dentist. If you have veneerscrowns, or bridgework, this treatment may not work for you. Every case is different, and Dr. Patel will explain your options and recommend the best course of action.

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE INVISALIGN TREATMENT?

Invisalign has many advantages that you should consider. One of the primary benefits loved by patients is that the aligners are practically invisible and aren’t easily noticeable while you wear them. Another good reason to consider Invisalign is that they are removable. This allows you to clean the aligners thoroughly, and even leave them out for an important event.

The BPA-free plastic blend used to make Invisalign aligners is much more comfortable for most patients and causes less irritation to your gums, tongue, and lips than metal does. Invisalign treatment works fast, and many patients achieve the results they want in just six to twelve months. They also require fewer trips to your dentist than regular metal braces.

HOW WILL INVISALIGN IMPACT MY LIFESTYLE?

The great thing about using Invisalign is that there is little effect on your life. You can carry on as normal and do all the activities you love without worry or self-consciousness. Your new aligners are nearly invisible, so no one should even notice them. Continue to eat the foods you love without restriction. You can even remove your aligners if needed for a special occasion.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY INVISALIGN ALIGNERS?

You can use the Invisalign Cleaning Crystals or other special tablets to clean your trays. Many patients find this the easiest way to keep them clean. However, you can also use a regular toothbrush and a rinse with warm water to clean your Invisalign aligners. The most important thing is to clean them thoroughly every day.

You should keep your aligner trays clean by brushing your teeth after every meal before you place your aligners back on your teeth. Placing them over food particles may cause stains on your teeth.

HOW LONG DOES INVISALIGN TREATMENT TAKE?

The total length of treatment time depends on the complexity and severity of your needs. Most treatment is completed within 18 months. Some patients are finished in just six months. Others take a year. You will, however, begin to notice results in just a few weeks.

WHAT DO I DO IF I BREAK AN ALIGNER?

Contact us if you break an aligner tray. Dr. Patel will help you stay on track with your treatment plan by recommending you wear your previous aligner, move on to the next, or order a replacement for your current stage of treatment.

WHAT HAPPENS ONCE MY TREATMENT IS FINISHED?

You might require a retainer to make sure your teeth stay in place once your Invisalign treatment is completed. Dr. Patel will determine if retainers are right for you and discuss your options. Now that your teeth are aligned, you can enjoy your fabulous new smile and improved confidence.
