What is a Smile Design?

by | Jan 18, 2023

Do you ever look in the mirror, see your smile, and feel self-conscious? A Smile Design is the planning process for creating your individualized treatment plan to take your smile from what it is now into a smile you can be proud of and makes you feel more confident. Your Smile Design is essentially a treatment plan.

HOW WE CREATE SHOW-STOPPING SMILES

We start your Smile Design treatment plan by fully defining our starting point. We’ll use high-tech cameras to take images of your teeth and put them into our computer system. Once we know more about the alignment and size of your teeth, whether any teeth are missing and their former location in the mouth, any chipping or breaking, and if you have any bone loss or dental disease, we’re better prepared to go over options for achieving the smile you’re dreaming of. We have a number of treatment options to transform your smile.

SMILE MAKEOVERS

Smile makeovers can be done in one or two visits by using composite bonding. If you want a quick solution to get a megawatt smile makeover, composite bonding is a great choice. Dr. Patel is well-versed in providing same-day smile makeovers.

The most important factors your doctor will weigh are your teeth’s characterization and texture, proportions, smile line, and length. Dr. Patel can make your smile more feminine or masculine based on tooth shape and the look you’re trying to achieve.

Did you know that a beautiful or handsome appearance is attributed to tooth length? The longer your teeth are, the more youthful and attractive your smile appears to be. Teeth shorten with age and wear and tear or they can look shorter because of a gummy smile. If you want to look more youthful with a better-balanced tooth-to-gums ratio, we’ll create a smile with the longest tooth length that works best for your smile. Composite bonding or porcelain veneers are a great option for patients with these concerns.

Are your teeth proportionate to each other? Dr. Patel will assess the proportions of your teeth and establish a plan to make them as balanced as possible, resulting in a more attractive smile. The line that traces the edges of your upper row of teeth from side to side should be the same curvature as your lower lip when you smile. She’ll use this line as a guide for how long your new teeth should be.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Sometimes, our adult patients have a pressing need for a new smile, like a new important job with expectations for your appearance. These clients don’t have the option to take the time for Invisalign treatments. When it’s possible and the patient is an appropriate candidate for it, we can transform a patient’s smile in just one or two office visits using porcelain veneers. It’s important to be conservative about stripping away tooth enamel for veneers, so Dr. Patel uses a very conservative approach and uses low-prep or no-prep veneers.

Another option for patients needing a same-day or two-day smile makeover is composite bonding. To do composite bonding, we create texture on the surface of existing teeth and cover them with a composite material. Dr. Patel will use the existing tooth as an anchor and foundation for a new tooth. We can do a complete smile makeover in a matter of hours for patients who qualify.

For clients who already have proportionate teeth in good condition with a balanced shape and size, we usually recommend Invisalign. Clear braces are a much faster option than traditional metal braces, and they can perform nearly all of the functions of other braces. They’re easy to remove during mealtimes, and the easy-to-clean trays make it simple to keep your braces and teeth clean. They’re also far more inconspicuous than adult metal braces. Invisalign is a great option for most patients with slight crowding, misalignment, or gaps and have no bite problems and they’re willing to wait for their results.

Smile makeovers can improve your oral health significantly. For those who are prone to chipping teeth, cavities, and other dental problems, having a smile makeover can offer pain relief and a stronger set of teeth that will last for years. Cracked, worn, or chipped teeth or teeth in poor health can be prepped and capped with crowns. Crowns are often the best option for patients with teeth in poor health.

When our patients have missing teeth, we like to use dental implants. When you lose teeth, the bone that your teeth were anchored in deteriorates. The anchor for dental implants is drilled into that bone, and it, in turn, grows around the anchor just like it would for a tooth’s roots. This preserves and strengthens the bone. Dental implants provide the full functionality of natural teeth without the vulnerability to decay. Whenever it’s appropriate for our patient’s case, we like to give clients the option to get dental implants. While they do take more time to finish, dental implants are long-lasting, fully functional, and very durable. They also look identical to natural teeth.
