Leu House Museum
Located at 1920 N Forest Ave, Orlando, FL 32803. The Leu Gardens, the Leu House Museum is an exquisite mansion that is full of history. It was originally built in 1888 as a farmhouse for the Mizell family, who were farmers of corn and sugarcane. The home was restored and converted into a museum in recent years. The museum features an ever-changing collection of artwork. This includes paintings by renowned artists such as Frank Farmer, whose work is well-known in Miami, Philadelphia, and New York.
The Leu House Museum is a National Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It features a restored 19th-century home that is filled with paintings and artifacts that represent the history of the Mizell family. It is open to the public from Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. There are also guided tours of the home that take visitors through the rooms of the house. The Mizell family first acquired the land on which the Leu House Museum is located in 1858. The family farmed corn and cotton, and David W. Mizell was killed in 1870. The property was then bought by Harry P. Leu, who was a native of Orlando. Leu purchased the property on Lake Rowena in 1936. Leu Gardens is located on 50 acres of grounds that are filled with exotic plants, flowers, and gardens. In spring and summer, the garden is filled with azaleas, rhododendrons, and roses. The garden features a botanical garden and an herb garden, where visitors can see medicinal and educational herbs. There is also a butterfly garden that features butterflies that flit around the garden. In addition, the garden has a lakeside path lined with bamboo and palms. In the spring, visitors can also see the Flower Clock, which is inspired by the famous floral clock in Edinburgh, Scotland. The clock was donated by the Kiwanis Club of Orlando in 1975.
The Leu House Museum is part of the Leu Botanical Gardens, which is also part of the Mizell-Leu House Historic District. The gardens were given the name in 1936. The garden is home to more than 15,000 plants. The gardens are located in a mild subtropical climate that allows for a variety of plants to grow. The gardens also include several art collections.
