Wisdom Teeth Removal in Orlando, FL
For many teens and young adults, wisdom teeth removal is a part of growing up. Although the surgery is quite common when it is you or your teen undergoing wisdom teeth extraction, worrying about the process is natural. Our oral surgeon, Dr. Milton, has years of experience in removing wisdom teeth in a minimally invasive manner to ensure every patient’s safety and quick recovery.
While some individual’s wisdom teeth come in without complications, most people do not have sufficient room in the back of the mouth for the third and final set of molars to erupt fully. When this happens, impaction is the result.

Types Of Impacted Wisdom Teeth
There are various types of impacted wisdom teeth, all of which can damage your teeth, gums, or jawbone if not treated.
- Soft Tissue Impaction: There is not enough room for the gum tissue to allow for proper oral hygiene.
- Partial Bony Impaction: There is enough space to allow the wisdom tooth to erupt partially. However, the tooth does not function properly, presses against neighboring molars, and is difficult to clean.
- Complete Bony Impaction: There is no space for the tooth to erupt. It remains trapped in the jawbone and requires complex surgical techniques for removal. It may become infected, damage adjacent teeth, or form an abscess, damaging the jawbone.
When Should My Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?
With an oral examination and x-rays of the mouth, Dr. Milton evaluates the position of the wisdom teeth to determine whether they may cause oral health problems now or in the future. Removing wisdom teeth before they cause health problems can prevent painful infections and trauma.
Waiting until your wisdom teeth become impacted later in life may lead to more complex surgery and longer recovery times. The older you are, the longer the roots of the wisdom teeth grow. These longer, denser roots may impinge on nerves in the jawbone or become entangled in blood vessels, making surgery to remove them more difficult when you are in your 30s, 40s, or older. This is why we recommend having your wisdom teeth removed when you are in your late teens or early 20s, when the surgery is relatively simple, and you or your teen will have a simpler, quicker recovery with less chance of infection or complications.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Dr. Milton performs wisdom teeth removal in our oral surgery suite. On the day of the procedure, you will be sedated for your comfort and to relieve any anxiety. The surgical site will be numbed with a local anesthetic.
Dr. Milton carefully cuts through the gum tissue and bone to access the wisdom teeth. If necessary, he may section the teeth (cut them into smaller pieces) for easier removal. After removal, the incisions are closed with sutures, and the surgical site is covered with gauze to control any bleeding. The entire process should take between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on how many teeth are removed and the complexity of the surgery.
We provide detailed post-op instructions to follow when you return home. It is important to follow these carefully. You will need to rest at home for the first 3-4 days and stick to a soft diet. Pain and swelling are normal for the first few days but can usually be controlled with over-the-counter pain relievers and ice packs. If you experience excessive pain, please contact our office at Dynamic Smile Design Office Phone Number (407) 895-5600, and we can provide a prescription for non-narcotic pain medication.
Why Is Wisdom Teeth Removal Important?
Without enough room in the back of the mouth for your wisdom teeth, problems can develop. If you wait until these problems are a reality, the surgery to remove them could be difficult because the roots of wisdom teeth continue to grow longer throughout your life. Problems with wisdom teeth are increasingly common as you age, leading to issues such as:
- Infection: Gum tissue around a partially erupted wisdom tooth can become painfully swollen and infected.
- Cysts: These fluid-filled sacs in the jawbone destroy bone tissue and spread to adjacent teeth.
- Crowding: Wisdom teeth sometimes push the front teeth out of alignment as they try to find room in the back of the mouth.
- Damage to Other Teeth: If your wisdom teeth are overlapping other molars or pushing against them, cleaning them is difficult. The result is often tooth decay, gum disease, or tooth loss.
Wisdom Teeth Removal FAQ
What does wisdom teeth removal cost?
The cost is determined based on how many teeth or being removed, the complexity of the surgery, the type of anesthesia used, and other factors. Dr. Milton will review the costs at your consultation so there are no surprises.
Does insurance pay for wisdom teeth removal?
Every insurance company has a different policy regarding the extent of coverage for wisdom teeth removal. It is usually covered if the teeth are impacted, as the surgery is considered medically necessary. We recommend you contact your insurance provider to confirm your coverage limits and copay, if any, for wisdom teeth removal. Our office staff can help you obtain the maximum coverage for your surgery.
How long will I have to be off work/out of school?
We urge you to take three days off of work or school to recover. During this time, lots of rest and hydration are crucial. This also allows any discomfort and swelling to subside. You can return to work after three days and should feel back to normal within a week.
Can I exercise after my wisdom teeth are removed?
For the first 5-7 days after wisdom teeth removal, avoid any strenuous activities, including exercise or going to the gym. These activities can increase bleeding and swelling.
What is a dry socket?
A dry socket is an extremely painful condition that occurs when the blood clot over the incision site is dislodged, and the nerves are exposed to air. It typically occurs 3-5 days after wisdom teeth removal. If your pain suddenly becomes more severe, contact our office immediately. We can relieve your pain and cover the incision site to prevent infection. You will feel almost immediate relief.
Does everyone have wisdom teeth?
No. Some people have four wisdom teeth; others have three, two, or none.
